Events at Erie County Public Libraries and Partner Sites November 7-12

Creators unite for Erie Makes! This event is for maker enthusiasts of all interests, from robotics to art to 3D printing. Celebrate creativity, curiosity and hands-on learning! Try something new: get a take-home kit or join one of our programs. This is a free family event for curious minds. Below is the calendar of events. Monday, November 7

Blasco Library, 160 Front Street East.

  • Woodland Owls 4-5:30 p.m.
    (No registration required) I Idea Lab: Come craft with us! Stop by anytime between 4-5:30 p.m. to make a little owl out of a tree cookie. All ages are welcome.
  • Portrait Photography 6-7 p.m. (Registration required) I Idea Lab: Local photographer Shaddai Rodriguez (Photos by Dai) is there to help you take a good portrait. Everyone will have the chance to take a portrait and have their picture taken with our DSLR camera. This course is ideal for anyone interested in photography or wanting to learn a little more about taking a great portrait. No experience is required. Register here. 13 and over
  • Craft evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (No registration required) I Blasco Children’s Storytime Room: Join us at the Blasco Library for craft evenings! This program is free and open to children of all ages and their families. Experiment with three different types of marbling during this fun craft night. Try shaving cream marbling, liquid starch marbling, and painting with glass beads. Children of all ages.
  • DIY Bath Fizzies 6pm-8pm (Compulsory registration) I Teen space: Join us to create your own bath fizzies! Choose from a variety of scents and shape them into fun shapes. Registration required. register here. 13-18 years old

Iroquois Avenue Branch Library, 4212 Iroquois Avenue

  • 6 p.m. Food Bag Tote (registration required): Create maker magic by turning trash into treasure. With several local grocery stores and department stores having stopped using plastic bags, now is a great time to learn how to make your own sturdy, washable, and durable shopping bags. This demo will show you how to use a few simple materials – a discarded food/seed bag, a thrifty pillowcase, an old belt, and some basic sewing skills – to create a reusable shopping bag that will stand up to your grocery shopping. heavier.   • Fall Animal ceramic tile 6-7 p.m. (registration required): Join us to make a decorative animal tile. Use a ceramic tile, engraved by Idea Lab’s Glowforge, and some sharpies to create a unique piece of art. Register here. 6 years and over

Tuesday, November 8

  • Framing workshop with the Erie Art Museum 12 p.m.-3 p.m. (No registration): The Erie Art Museum is an institution of excellence dedicated to the promotion and advancement of the visual arts by developing and maintaining a quality art collection, encouraging art in all its forms, fostering learning throughout life and creating a community among artists, art students and the public. Join us to learn what it takes to prepare artwork for display in the museum from our Collections Manager and Chief Preparer. You will create your own art using Polaroid cameras and apply your new skills to create a simple frame.
  • Tape show from 4-5 p.m.
    (No registration): Explore the world of adhesive tape! Visit the lab to make a flower pen out of duct tape. Take home more duct tape project ideas to try. 8 years and over
  • Scrabble charms 6-7:30 p.m. (Registration required): Make jewelry with scrabble pieces. Choose from a selection of designs and follow step-by-step instructions to create your own pendant. Register here. 13 and over

Claytopia, 924 W Erie Plaza Dr.

  • Painting a tile from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (registration required): Join our friends at Claytopia to paint your own ceramic tile! Leave it there to get fired and come back later to collect your completed art. What kind of design will you do? Register here. The tiles for this event are for ages 5-17.

Iroquois Avenue Branch Library: 4212 Iroquois Avenue

  • Binding from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (registration required): Join Dana Nahas at the Iroquois Library to learn how to decorate and sew your own book. Create your own art book, journal, sketchbook, diary or keepsake book from paper using this binding technique. Register here. 12 years old – Adult.

Wednesday, November 9

Blasco Library, 160 Front Street East.

  • Laser-cut garden stakes 4-5:30 p.m. (Registration required): Design a basic garden stake with a free design program. Cut it out of wood using our laser cutter for your next garden. Register here. 13 and over
  • Go back to the apron from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (registration required); Whether you’re a baker, grill master, or artist, you can use an apron to keep the mess where it belongs – out of your clothes! Create a custom design on the Cricut to match your apron to your unique personality. Register here. 10 years and over

Lincoln Community Center: 1255 Manchester Road.

  • Paper flower garden 10am-11.30am
    (No registration): Create a decorative garden with Cricut and paper cut flowers from Idea Lab. Swirl different floral designs to create your own unique garden. 8 years and over
  • DIY ceramic trivet 1:30 p.m.-3 p.m. (Registration required): Join us to create a custom trivet. A trivet is an object placed between a hot serving platter/bowl/pot and a dining table/counter to protect the surface from heat damage. Use a ceramic tile, engraved by Idea Lab’s Glowforge, and some sharpies to make a trivet to take home. Register here. 10 years and over
  • Have fun with Snap Circuits 3:30-4:30 p.m.
    (No registration): Stop to explore the world of instant circuits. Instant circuits allow you to safely learn the world of electricity. Make things that light up, make sounds and fly! 6 years and over

Thursday, November 10

Blasco Library, 160 Front Street East.

  • Painting 101: Sunset over the cacti 3-4:30 p.m.
    (Registration required): Try your hand at acrylic painting. Follow a step-by-step guided painting lesson to create a desert sunset with cactus plants. Registration required. Register here. 10 years and over
  • Let there be light! Introduction to welding 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. (registration required): Join Steve Patterson to learn the basics of soldering. You will learn about solder types and connections. Then practice soldering yourself to make a small LED light up. This course is for those who have no prior knowledge or experience of welding. Register here. 13 and over

RCAM Erie, 142 West 12th Street.

  • Podcasting Basics 11am-2pm
    (Registration required): Podcasting is a great way to express yourself or explore a subject, join CAM to learn how to set up, record and edit a podcast. Each group will leave with a 5 to 10 minute podcast to share with family and friends! 13 and over

Saturday November 12

  • Game development and testing with Whitethorn Games from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (without registration): Meet Whitethorn Games, a local independent game publisher focused on games anyone can play. Some of their employees will be at the library going over the ins and outs of game development and testing. Thinking of making your own game? Come with questions! All ages are welcome!
  • Palooza button! 12 p.m.-4 p.m. (no registration): How are you doing ? Do you do with art, music, writing, science and something else? Show us by making a button! Draw, design and share what you love to do and take the button home. All ages are welcome!
  • Paper Quilling: Community Art Project from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (without registration): The Idea Lab needs your help! We need new art to get on our walls! Stop and squeeze some paper to add to our wall design. Add one or more songs. Create your own little piece of paper art to take home! All ages are welcome!
  • Spoon Carving Demonstration 12pm-3pm (No registration): Learn about the art of spoon carving by local carpenter Kenneth Bownes. Kenneth will talk about the spoon sculpting process and work in the lab during Erie Makes. Stop by to see the process and ask questions!

Floor printing: 1902 Cherry Street.

  • Papermaking and engraving! 12 p.m.-5 p.m. (no registration): Ashley Pastore, papermaker, artist and owner of Grounded Printshop, will show you how to make your own paper and make a monoprint using the presses and equipment in space. It’s an exciting way to see how paper is made, how engraving works, and to ask questions! All ages are welcome!

Lake Erie Woodwork: 1113 Walnut St.

Wonders of woodworking 9 a.m.-2 p.m. (no registration required)): Stop by anytime between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Lake Erie Woodworks for an open shop tour and woodworking equipment demonstrations. During your visit, make a simple name sign using a CNC machine. Armando Reyes, carpenter and owner of Lake Erie Woodworks, will be there to answer any woodworking questions and offer advice on any projects or ideas you may have. Downtown District Art House: 201 E 10 St.

Second Saturday: Treasure Day from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (registration required): On the second Saturday of each month, the Neighborhood Art House opens its doors for an interactive art class open to all ages! For our second Saturday during Erie Makes, join us in painting and beautifying a small treasure chest and learning how to create a hidden message with Morse code jewelry! Register here.
