Celebrate National Library Week at PDL
National Library Week runs from April 3-9, and we have plenty of activities to help you celebrate your library!
Monday to Friday, April 4 to 8 at 1 p.m. — Lunch with the director of the library. Have you always wanted to sit down with the director of the library to rack her brains, file your complaints or make suggestions? Do you also like free lunch? Every day, I go to lunch with three clients and various staff members to discuss everything and nothing about the library. Registration is mandatory.
Monday, April 4 at 1 p.m. — A double feature by the cinematographic librarian. There are plenty of movies that feature librarians as characters, and today we’re going to look at two of my favorites: a classic and an adventure.
Tuesday, April 5 at 6:30 p.m. — The care and supply of a library collection. Have you ever wondered where the library buys books, or how we select movies for the collection, or why we decide to remove items? All these questions and many more will be answered during this in-depth exploration of the library’s collection. Registration is mandatory.
Wednesday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m. — Library Funding 101. Library funding is a complex and ever-changing thing, but we’ll explain the basics of where our money comes from and how we keep the library operational.
Thursday April 7 at 4:30 p.m. — Behind the scenes at PDL. You’re probably pretty well aware of what’s going on on the client side of the loan desk, but what’s going on in the mysterious rooms and behind-the-scenes nooks? Explore every inch of the library and satisfy your curiosity on this tour.
Friday and Saturday, April 8 and 9 — Don’t forget that the library also offers books and other documents for sale year-round. Stop by one of these days and get a $1 coupon for our sale items. You might be surprised at the treasures you’ll find there!
Children and teenagers

April books and covers: Don’t let the April showers deter you from attending the Portland District Library’s Outdoor Storytime on Thursday, April 7 at 6 p.m. Come to the sensory garden ready to splash around in your raincoats and wellies as we read, sing, and dance together (and maybe jump in a few puddles). Each child will enjoy a themed snack and receive a surprise to take home. This program requires registration and is recommended for families with children 8 and under.
Page turners: Page Turners, the Portland District Library’s teen book club is reading Diana Urban’s All Your Twisted Secrets this spring. You can register and pick up your own copy of the book from Tuesday, March 1 at the Youth Office. The number of places is limited to 10 teenagers aged 13 to 18. In-person meetings are scheduled for Saturday, April 16 at 10 a.m. and Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m.
What do the queen bee, star athlete, valedictorian, stoner, loner, and music geek all have in common? They’ve all been invited to a scholarship dinner, only to find out it’s a trap. Someone has locked them in a room with a bomb, a syringe full of poison, and a note saying they have one hour to choose someone to kill… or else everyone dies.
— The Portland District Library is located at 334 Kent St., Portland. For more information, call 517-647-6981 or visit pdl.michlibrary.org.
