Actress and musician Lola Kirke released his new song “Better Than Any Drug,” a retro-sounding groovy pop banger that also serves as the lead single from his upcoming new album, lady for sale, released in April.

Over a steady, punchy beat and nasal guitar strokes, Kirke unleashes her upbeat voice as she sings about being in the swoon throes of a brand new love: “Because you feel better than any drug / Ooh I think I’m in love. The song, which harnesses that infectious and dynamic pop of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” era, arrives with an equally vivid music video premiering on NYLON, below. Shot in black and white by director Alex Eaton, Kirke dances around her house – shimmying in the kitchen, kicking the pool table – in a sheer black dress, much like you would if you were also developing a new crush.

“Director Alex Eaton and I wanted to honor Madonna’s reference in the video, so we took a lot from the documentary of Madonna’s 90s tour. truth of action,Kirke writes of the video in an email. “As I’m nowhere near the dancer that Madonna is, we enlisted the wonderful choreographer/actress Angela Trimbur to create movement that felt as organic, sexy and playful. What I lack in skill, I make up for in enthusiasm, so I think it went really well.

lady for sale is Kirke’s second album and will be released on the legendary Third Man Records. She released her first project, West Heart Head, in 2018, a collection of country-tinted starry-eyed folk.

Watch “Better Than Any Drug” below and read on for an interview with Kirke about making “Better Than Any Drug,” the story behind his new album’s title, and what you can expect to hear on the project.

What are you doing at the moment ? Describe your environment.

I’m at my kitchen table, staring at dead flowers and a half-drunk bottle of wine I opened two nights ago and was too tired to finish.

Tell us about “Better Than Any Drug”, what prompted you to write it?

This song came about after I was asked to write something I wish I had when I was 12…which I guess says a lot about how early my childhood was! I asked my dear friend and pop genius Holiday Sidewinder to co-write it with me and it ended up sounding a bit like a Madonna song that I would have listened to ad nauseam. Director Alex Eaton and I wanted to honor that reference in the video, so we took a lot from the documentary of Madonna’s 90s tour Truth or Dare. Since I’m far from being the dancer that Madonna is, we brought in the wonderful choreographer/actress Angela Trimbur to create a movement that felt so organic, sexy and playful. What I lack in skill, I make up for in enthusiasm so I think it went really well.

Your new album is called lady for sale. Is there a story behind?

I hadn’t worked as an actress for a long time and the demos I was doing for this record didn’t arouse any interest. People in the industry on the acting side were naming my weight as the problem, which was humiliating. On the music side, it was the same refrain: “You have to be like 14 years old and massive on TikTok.” I started to feel like a product to sell, instead of an artist. The worst was that no one was buying. Then I thought of how many people were chasing their dreams in the same boat, so I wrote a song about it. Thematically it’s an outlier on the record – the rest of the album is about falling in love when you’re not really supposed to and how wild it is to follow your heart anyway – but the words “Lady for Sale” seemed to capture the sonic aesthetic the most, so we made that the name of the album.

What’s it like to release the project with the legendary Third Man Records?

Incredible! I couldn’t be happier working with them. They’re just the coolest. Visiting their office makes me feel like a musical version of Charlie in the vinyl chocolate factory.

What can listeners expect from the new album?

Think like Dolly from the 80s [Parton] hanging out with “Stand Back” Stevie [Nicks] at Donna Summers’ birthday party, which is being held in Tanya Tucker’s RV.
