The Index’s Emaleah Hursh Recommends Her Favorite Summer Tracks
“Some” by Steve Lacy, “Mariella” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, and “She’s My Collar” by Gorillaz featuring Kali Uchis
With summer approaching and warmer weather, having great jams to listen to is essential. Some of my warm weather favorites are “Some” by Steve Lacy, “Mariella” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, and “She’s My Collar” by Gorillaz featuring Kali Uchis.
These songs sound summery to me, and I think they’re perfect for listening to in the summer sun, whatever the activity. These artists have stellar music that is super catchy and all have a similar vibe and feel. Exploring their albums and discography will lead you to some bangers.
These artists are of various genres. Artists like Steve Lacy and Kali Uchis fall into a similar category of R&B while Gorillaz falls into the alternative or dance genre. All of these artists have really cool albums. Gorillaz released their debut album in 2001 while Steve Lacy’s debut album was released in 2019. These artists are different in many ways but complement each other when listened to song by song.
“Shes my Collar” begins quickly and abruptly with a beat that continues throughout the song. Gorillaz’s music varies from intense to slow which makes this band versatile. On the other hand, “Mariella” begins with an instrumental beginning which relies on the voice of Leon Bridges. Steve Lacy’s “Some” also begins with a quieter intro, a simple beat allows the harmonies to shine through throughout this song. All these songs carry a different energy but all make me think of summer in the sun. —Emaleah Hursh
