Throttling apps from the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers

Samsung doesn’t seem to have learned from Apple, as the company has been caught throttling the performance of thousands of apps.

According to XDA, Samsung uses an app called Game Optimization Service (GOS) to throttle the performance of more than 10,000 apps. The list includes some of the most popular apps out there, including Netflix, Microsoft Office, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube Music, and more.

Samsung has even confirmed the existence of GOS and that it limits apps.

“Samsung created an app called GOS and used it to throttle game performance, which worsens the gaming experience. performance to more than 10,000 applications…”

The videos demonstrate the impact of GOS, especially on games, significantly degrading performance.

Apple found itself in hot water when it was discovered that the company was limiting the performance of older devices. The company was slapped with multiple lawsuits when the news broke, lawsuits which Apple ultimately lost.

At least in Apple’s case, the argument could be made that the company only limits older phones in an effort to increase longevity. In Samsung’s case, however, GOS runs on some of the company’s newer phones, including the S22, the phones people buy expecting premium performance.

Needless to say, Samsung customers aren’t happy, and that’s understandable.
